Man United set to become first British team to earn £500m a season

Manchester United have today announced that the club achieved a record quarterly revenue of £123.4m for the period January to March despite not having played Champions League football since December.

The news was delivered by the Red Devils chief executive Ed Woodward during a conference call with the club’s investors and shows that the club are on course to become the first ever British sports team to earn £500m in a business year.

This will be seen as a positive for United as they failed to progress beyond the group stages of the Champions League last year and could only reach the last 16 of the Europa League.

Commercial revenue increased by 37.7% from 2015, rising to £65.8m for the period. Broadcasting revenues increased by 28.1% to £27.8m while matchday earnings was up by 16.9% to £29.8m. Overall, this represents a 29.9% rise for Man United for a quarterly term.

During those three months last year, they earned £47.8m on commercial, £21.7m for broadcasting and £25.5m on match day profits.

Their commercial revenue for the span of July 2015 to March 2016 has been reported to be £203m, a huge rise on those same months between 2014 and 2015, where they earned £151m.

This continues to show that the club are one of the leading football teams in terms of finance and funds and highlights the valuable deals that Woodward has brought to the club in the past three years.

These figures have emerged during one of United’s most disappointing seasons, however, as they are likely to finish below the top four, after losing 10 games in the league.

United currently sit in fifth place in the table with Louis van Gaal’s future still unclear, with Woodward failing to mention his head coach at all while revealing latest figures to investors.

While they could realistically be playing in the Europa League this season, United do have the chance to win the FA Cup later this month, where they will play Crystal Palace in the final.

“We’re looking forward to the FA Cup final,” said Woodward. “And hopefully winning this special trophy for a record-equalling twelve times.”

The record in question for FA Cup wins currently belongs to Arsenal.
