REPORT: Liverpool and Fenerbahce agree deal for Martin Skrtel

Martin Skrtel is reportedly set to leave Liverpool, as Fenerbahce have agreed a £5m transfer fee with the Reds.

Skrtel is one of Liverpool’s longest-serving players, with the defender having been at the club since January 2008.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp in October and has struggled with injuries, while the signing of Joel Matip appears to have been the death knell as far as Skrtel’s Liverpool career is concerned.

According to the Telegraph, the Slovakia international is now on the brink of a move away.

The report claims that a £5m bid has been accepted by Liverpool, after Klopp informed the defender that he could depart Merseyside last month.

The 31-year-old, who is currently away at Euro 2016, will finalise the contract in the coming days, the source suggests, while his agent has taken care of the transfer thus far.

A tough-tackling centre-back, Skrtel averaged 10 defensive actions per game in the Premier League this season – more than any other Liverpool player – but he remains rather error-prone and lacks pace.

It emerged on Wednesday that Skrtel had been targeted by three clubs, with Fenerbahce joined in the chase for the defender by Wolfsburg and an unnamed Chinese club.

However, it appears that Skrtel will make the move to Turkey, with Liverpool seemingly ready to sanction the transfer.

Fenerbahce has been a regular destination for Premier League players in recent times, with the likes of Nani and Robin van Persie currently starring there, and Skrtel will surely relish being able to play regularly again.
