Florentino Perez has poured cold water on the potential for big-money transfers this summer, claiming that without the Super League, clubs simply don’t have the resources.
The Real Madrid president, who has become the spokesperson for the doomed project, tried his best to paint Los Blancos as the underdogs of world football.
“We are just working on saving football, after this pandemic,” he told El Larguero. “ Madrid income falling from 900m to 600m this year. We have worked very hard on something that would satisfy everyone – and we did expect such a response.”
After the six Premier League clubs sensationally turned their back on the plans, with Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan following suit, the chances of Perez’s dream ever being realised stand at slim to none.
And with that in mind, the Real chief has predicted it will be a quiet window and in particular, pointed to superstars Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
Both are set to cost in the region of £150m, with the Paris Saint-Germain forward still yet to decide on his future at the Parc des Princes.
Mbappe is arguably the biggest ‘Galactico’ currently plying their trade in European football, but based on Perez’s comments, a move to the Bernabeu appears unlikely.
“In general, there will not be big transfers this summer,” the 74-year-old told El Larguero.
“When money does not flow from the rich clubs to the poor clubs, everyone suffers.
“It’s impossible to make signings like Mbappe and Haaland, in general, not just for Real Madrid, without the Super League.
“If we don’t sign Mbappe this summer, I don’t think any fan will shoot himself in the head. They know we’re doing our best, and if things don’t happen, it’s because they’re impossible.”
But his ‘impossible’ assessment seems to be more of an assessment on his own team’s dire financial straits, rather than concern for the rest of Europe.
