Lionel Messi Sets Two New UCL Records, Surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi has made an amazing start to the 2022-23 season, setting two new Champions League records in the win against Maccabi Haifa yesterday.

In his latest European outing for Paris Saint-Germain, the mercurial Argentine rewrote history once more. In one of those, he overtook longtime adversary Cristiano Ronaldo on the scoring top.

Meanwhile in the other, he edged out Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Which New Records Did Messi Set?

Wednesday’s Champions League match between PSG and Maccabi saw Messi open the scoring for PSG, making the Israeli team the 39th different team he has scored against in that competition.

His closest rival, Portuguese superstar Ronaldo, who is not participating with Manchester United this year, has scored against 38 teams.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner also made history by becoming the first player to score in 18 separate Champions League campaigns.

The nearest competitor there was French and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, although he will match Messi’s feats when he opens his European account for 2022โ€“23.

The 35-year-old South American has four goals and seven assists so far this season as he counts down the days until his next attempt at winning the World Cup in 2022.
