Kane: Italy have better history than us in terms of winning tournaments

England captain Harry Kane spoke about the ‘extra special’ EURO 2020 Final at Wembley and admitted Italy ‘have a better history than us’ but stressed the Three Lions ‘have full belief’ and are ready to write history on Sunday.

Kane scored the decisive goal to send England to the Final of the Euros with a rebound goal in the 2-1 win after extra time against Denmark and said the England squad ‘look forward’ to the big game against the Azzurri.

“It’s been a long journey, it’s been a tough journey, with a lot of ups and downs along the way,” Kane told Sky Sports. “But to be playing and leading the boys out in our first Final, our first European Final and our first Final for 55 years or so is going to be extra special.

“The excitement’s there, I’m sure there’s going to be a few nerves, but we just look forward to it. You have to take these moments and enjoy these moments of history and hopefully we can go one step further and win the whole thing.”

Italy started a 33-match unbeaten run against Ukraine on October 10 in 2018 and have won 28 of them, including extra time and penalty shootouts.

The Azzurri have won four World Cups and one European Championship and Kane knows the opponents on Sunday have a ‘better history’ but pointed out the experience in the England squad too.

“It’s a real 50-50 game, I think,” Kane said. “Of course, Italy have a better history than us in terms of winning tournaments, winning major Finals, but I think in our team a lot of us have had experience at club level, we are playing in the biggest games, the biggest Finals across Europe.

“It’s a really tough game, obviously from our point of view we have full belief in what we are doing and how we’ve been setting up, but it will be very tough.

“They have some great players with great experience, they’ve been there and done it. In any Final, in any big game, you have to be on it in all aspects so we know that’s the case on Sunday and hopefully we can swing it in our favour.”
