Kane admits Tottenham have not been good enough despite sealing European place

Harry Kane has claimed that Tottenham have under achieved in the Premier League this season despite ending on a high by claiming a Europa League spot.

Spurs were among the favourites to secure a top four finish at the start of the campaign off the back of reaching a Champions League final but they endured a terrible start which saw Mauricio Pochettino sacked in November with the north London side marooned down in 14th.

Jose Mourinho has since turned around the club’s fortunes, and the team’s post lockdown form has ensured a top six place and a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Kane though insists the aim is already on trying to improve next term in a bid to return to the top four.

‘I think we finished well,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘Obviously three wins and getting the draw which was enough [for a Europa League spot].

‘We are still working as much as possible for when we go back to pre-season for a few weeks and try and start the season strong. We can do better than what we have done this year and that’s our aim going forward.’

Kane has been in fine form in recent weeks, scoring five goals in the last three games of the season including in the final day 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

Although the England striker admitted Spurs were not at their best, he was pleased the team managed to sneak into the top six on the final day of the season after Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2-0 defeat at Chelsea saw them slip to seventh.

‘It was massive. we wanted to win it but late in the second half we heard what was going on in the other game so obviously it changed our mindset a little a bit in terms of getting a draw and a European place.

‘We could have played better, we didn’t play great today but we got the job done. It’s been an up and down season so it’s nice to finish in the Europa League.’
