Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry believes that Zlatan Ibrahimovic “wants” to join Arsenal this summer.
Arsenal have stuttered badly in their pursuit of the Premier League title in recent weeks. The Gunners are without a win in three games, while the likes of Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur have started to pull away from them. One of the Gunners’ main problems has been in the final third, with Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott all struggling in front of goal.
Given how open and topsy-turvy this season has been thus far, this year probably represented Arsene Wenger’s best chance of winning the title in a very long time, and Henry fears that if they miss out yet again it could affect their ability to bring quality players in this summer.
However, the former Arsenal striker has claimed that Ibrahimovic, who’s out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, would like to come to the Emirates.
“I hear that Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants to come, but it’s a problem who is going to want to come?” the pundit told Sky Sports. “First and foremost we need to concentrate and see if we can win this one [Premier League] because there’s not going to be a better chance.
“And although we’re far away from it at the moment there’s still some points to go and hopefully we can do it, I still believe that we can. Now the question is who can we sign, who is available first and foremost? I think a lot will depend on if we finish in the top four, are we going to make the Champions League to attract that sort of players?
“You know Zlatan, he can do the job and N’Golo Kante can do a job for us – I’m sure Leicester City fans will be upset with what I said. But those are the kind of guys that we know about that we must try and get.”
Ibrahimovic has enjoyed quite the season at PSG, helping the Parisiens run away with Ligue 1 this term. The no.10 has scored 23 goals in 23 league appearances, with a shot accuracy of 60% and an average pass accuracy of 79%.
As for Arsenal, they sit third on 52 points after their 2-2 draw with Spurs last weekend, but they’re still three adrift of their north London neighbours in second and eight behind leaders Leicester with just nine games remaining.
Next up for Wenger’s men is their FA Cup quarter-final clash with Watford at the Emirates tomorrow afternoon, as they look to win the competition for the third year on the bounce.
After that the Gunners take on Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night in the Champions League, before facing Everton in the league next weekend.
