“He Was Their NO.1” – Nagelsmann’s Agent Speaks On The Reason He Rejected Chelsea

The agent of Julian Nagelsmann, Volker Struth has claimed the German was the first choice manager to replace Graham Potter at Chelsea.

Nagelsmann was fired from his post at Bayern Munich at the end of March. And at the beginning of April, Potter was relieved of his managerial duties in Chelsea.

Naturally, rumors started to circulate that Nagelsmann was the top target for the Blues executives, who decided to hire Frank Lampard temporarily while they carried out a comprehensive investigation.

It seemed inevitable that Nagelsmann would emerge as the favored candidate for Chelsea’s owners as Luis Enrique was deemed unlikely for the job.

Instead, the 35-year-old withdrew from the race two days later. And as has been widely speculated for several weeks, Mauricio Pochettino is on the verge of being officially announced as the new manager at Stamford Bridge.

Struth, who has criticized the club’s transfer policies and maintained that Nagelsmann can accept the position had he wanted it. He has however stated that there are no regrets in not making a stronger effort to land the Chelsea position.

Speaking to BILD podcast Phrasenmaher, Struth said: “I can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call. There were some phone conversations.

“It was the right decision not to go there. It’s a club in troubled waters at the moment. And their transfer policy. Spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met. There were also some other issues.

“He was their No.1 (choice), that was our information. I believe it would have happened if he had wanted it.”
