Giroud sends message to Lampard after Rennes winner

Olivier Giroud says he will continue to deliver when called upon by Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.

The Frenchman has hardly played this season due to the performances of Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner.

But the veteran striker came off the bench to score a late winner against Rennes on Tuesday, booking Chelsea’s place in the Champions League knockout rounds.

“We must continue this good run, we won tonight, even if it was with difficulty,” Giroud told RMC Sport.

“Obviously for an attacker when the coach brings you on you have to bring something, now I am staying concentrated on what I have to do.

“When he calls on me, I do the job, nothing more.”

The goal was his first-ever Champions League goal for the Blues and a first in the competition for four years so it was no wonder the 34-year-old was pleased with the evening’s work in the aftermath of the action.

“We needed this win,” he told the club’s website. “We dominated the game for big parts of the first half but then they pushed a lot, even though we stayed in the game. It was difficult because they had a strong desire and lots of aggression.

“It almost felt like a Premier League game. They were unlucky but we are very pleased with these three points against a team with strong character.”
