Gabriel Jesus, Martin Odegaard Nominated For PL Player Of The Month

The Premier League have nominated Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard from Arsenal for the Player of the Month award for the month of August.

Jesus has successfully established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice center-forward, contributing six goals in as many games this season, scoring three and assisting three more.

The Brazil international assisted on all four goals in the 4-2 victory over Leicester City, and he impressed against Manchester United despite losing 3-0.

Meanwhile, skipper Odegaard followed up his brace against Bournemouth with an equaliser against Fulham last month, and he has started every game for Arsenal so far.

The Norwegian captain recovered from an ankle injury in time to play against Manchester United, and the Gunners – the only team with more than one August nominee – remain top of the table after six games.

The duo have now been recognised for their performances with nominations for the season’s first Player of the Month award, but they will face heavy competition for the individual award.

Who Has Been Nominated?

Manchester City talisman Erling Braut Haaland, who scored 10 goals in his first six Premier League appearances for the club, is one of the eight nominees.

The 22-year-old debuted with a brace against West Ham United before going on to score back-to-back hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, and he also reached the 25-goal milestone in the Champions League against Sevilla in midweek.

No other players from the ‘Big Six’ clubs have been nominated for the award, which also includes a nomination for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Pascal Gross, who started the season with three goals and two assists.

Leeds United attacker Rodrigo has also prospered under Jesse Marsch, scoring four goals in five Premier League appearances so far, and he is another another attacking player in contention for the award.

Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace has scored five goals in as many games, and he has been in fine form for the Eagles amid yet another transfer saga during the summer transfer window.

Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fulham’s leading scorer, has already struck the back of the goal six times in the Premier League and is the only Cottagers representative shortlisted for August’s award.

Finally, Newcastle United’s last line of defence, Nick Pope, had three clean sheets to start the season and made nine saves in last weekend’s goalless draw with Palace.

Only Zaha has previously won the Premier League Player of the Month award, which he won in April 2018.
