FIFA Set To Make Changes To The 2026 World Cup

According to reports, FIFA will reveal its plans for the 2026 World Cup. The body is expected to return to a four-team group stage for the grandiose tournament.

In 3 years time, 48 teams will participate for the first time in the World cup edition in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. There has been much discussion about a new layout with 16 groups of three teams.

FIFA is believed to have been reconsidering the plan in recent months. With the concern that it might result in less exciting matches.

There will be four teams in each group, based on a new report from The Athletic. Which means a total of 104 games will be played during the competition.

The recommended format would make the World Cup the biggest and longest one ever.

At a gathering of the FIFA Council on Tuesday in Kigali, Rwanda. FIFA officials have gathered for their annual congress on Thursday. This is when the football’s governing body will approve the plans.

Twelve groups of four teams each would be used in the new proposals. The best two moving on to the knockout rounds. They would then be joined to the next stage by the top eight third-place teams.

Recently, calls for three-team groups have emerged after the recent 2022 World Cup in Qatar. When underdog teams like Japan and South Korea progressed to the round of 16.

While heavyweight teams like Germany, Belgium, and Uruguay were eliminated. After coming short of the second place by the slimmest of margins.
