Fernandinho warns Chelsea their eight-point lead is “not that relevant”

Fernandinho hinted that Manchester City still have a chance of winning the Premier League this season, describing Chelsea‘s eight-point lead at the top of the table as “not that relevant”.

City were considered out of the title-race not long ago, but wins in their last three league contests have moved Pep Guardiola’s side up to second.

The Citizens are still eight points behind leaders Chelsea though but, with 39 points still to play for across 13 league matches, Fernandinho has refused to concede the championship to the Blues.

With a crucial clash between the two sides to come at Stamford Bridge in April, the Brazilian can see contests where City can make ground on Chelsea. The 31-year-old added that Chelsea’s eight-point lead doesn’t really matter, given how tough the Premier League is.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Fernandinho said: “Everyone knows how hard is the Premier League, so eight points are not that relevant.

“We still have to face them at their own stadium which is one of those six-pointer type of game and of course everything is possible in the Premier League.

“Teams can drop points and draw so we will carry on expecting that to happen. Unfortunately, our next game in the Premier League is not until the start of March which seems a long time. But I think it was important to win against Bournemouth and get an extra three points and jump into the second position.”

Fernandinho has been a crucial aspect of City’s side under Guardiola, playing in 20 league matches this season.
