Ferdinand Advises Ten Hag On Who Should Replace Fernandes As Man United Captain

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has urged Erik ten Hag to name Luke Shaw as the Red Devils captain in their huge clash against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

United skipper, Bruno Fernandes will not be playing at Anfield because he received his fifth yellow card of the season during the shocking 3-0 loss to Bournemouth due to dissent. The weekend will see the Portugal international serve a one-match suspension.

Harry Maguire, the former club captain, has been back to form this season. But Ten Hag may decide not to put the defender under further pressure by handing him back the captaincy. It remains to be seen who will wear the armband in Fernandes’ absence. And in that case, Ferdinand thinks Shaw might be authorized.

Before putting out Shaw during a talkSPORT discussion as reported by The Mirror, Ferdinand acknowledged he had no idea who would lead United out against their eternal rivals.

What Did Ferdinand Say On Man United Captaincy?

He said: “You’d think it would be Harry Maguire, given that he was the last captain. But I don’t know who he will go with. There’s not many names jumping off the team sheet. Luke Shaw, maybe?”

Opinions on Ten Hag’s choice to give Fernandes the armband back in the summer are divided. Many supporters and commentators think the midfielder is not fit for that kind of role.

After the United captain once again let himself down with poor body language during the crushing defeat to Bournemouth, Chris Sutton became the latest figure in the football world to take a hard stance against the 29-year-old.

Sutton questioned his attitude after picking up on comments Fernandes made after the match.

He wrote in The Mail: “There was one quote in particular from Bruno Fernandes which summed up the alarmingly poor attitude among Manchester United’s players.

“It was his admission that they thought it was ‘going to be easy’. United underestimated Bournemouth and they were schooled because of that.”
