As reported by the Daily Mail, Chelsea welcomed their former midfield star back at Cobham earlier this week, working on his fitness as he continues to search for a new club this term. The 35-year-old joined Panathinaikos in the summer of 2015, making 15 appearances in all competitions before leaving at the end of the season.

Essien enjoyed an incredibly successful nine years at Stamford Bridge, joining the club back in 2005 from Lyon. He made over 250 appearances in all competitions in that spell, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a League Cup, the Community Shield and the Champions League.

The former Ghana international also took in spells at Real Madrid and AC Milan following his time in west London, joining the Spanish giants on a season-long loan deal in 2012. Although his career is now beginning to wind- down, Essien’s commitment to stay fit and search for a new club suggests that he’s not ready to hang up his boots just yet.

As for his former club, Chelsea have scored 27 goals and conceded nine in their opening 12 Premier League fixtures this season, sitting top on 28 points, one clear of both Liverpool and Manchester City.

Next up for them is a home clash with Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, before taking on City at the Etihad.
