Super Eagles defender Tyronne Ebuehi has revealed his delight after winning his first competitive cap for Nigeria in their 2-0 World Cup win over Iceland on Friday.
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) were aware that they will break the rules if they approach new Benfica wing-back Ebuehi to represent the Netherlands after the 2018 World Cup.
Only two days ago, that would have been possible, but manager Gernot Rohr handed Ebuehi his first competitive appearance when he introduced the defender at half-time as replacement for Brian Idowu.
The Haarlem-born youngster had missed out on playing his first official match for the Super Eagles against South Africa in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in June 2017, and was also an unused substitute in the World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon and Algeria.
Writing on Instagram few minutes after the clash at the Volgograd Arena, Ebuehi said : ” Happy with my World Cup Debut and Thankful for the result! #SoarSuperEagles #Blessed 🇳🇬🦅🔝🙏🏽”.
Ebuehi was impressive in his first competitive game for Nigeria and his only low point was when he conceded a penalty for tripping Alfred Finnbogason with eight minutes remaining.
Referee Matthew Conger first failed to spot the foul but later awarded a penalty to the Icelandic team after he stopped the game and watched the video review of the incident.
The 22-year-old Ebuehi earned his eighth international cap against the Nordic country.
