Dortmund chief reveals why they rejected Man Utd offer for Sancho

Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke admits the club rejected a big offer for Jadon Sancho.

The English attacker was a key target for Manchester United this summer.

But the club was unable to agree a fee for the youngster, and he ended up staying at Dortmund.

“We could have made a big, valuable transfer in the summer, that’s well known. But we’re glad it didn’t come to this,” Watzke told reporters.

“Of course, we will also implement transfers again in the future, because Corona is clearly throwing us back.

“Even the biggest clubs are feeling the effects of the pandemic, be it Bayern, Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“At some point you come to the limit of what you can answer for. You can even see that in Munich right now with David Alaba as an example.”

Watzke added it was not inconceivable that Sancho would be sold next summer.

“They (United) misjudged the situation and thought we would be more willing to compromise. We had a clear line and will continue to do so next summer.

“In this industry, you can never say that a player is completely unsellable. I heard and read everywhere in the spring that Sancho was gone. But he’s here.

“We had an agreement with him and it didn’t look like that.”
