Diaby ruled out for four months after picking up ankle injury with Marseille

Marseille midfielder Abou Diaby‘s injury hell has continued, after the club confirmed he will miss four months of action following surgery on an ankle problem.

Diaby – once tipped to become the new Patrick Vieira at Arsenal – has endured a nightmare career in the game, with injuries restricting him from fulfilling the potential he once had a youngster.

The former Auxerre man joined Arsenal all the way back in 2006 and much was expected of him in the middle of the park, but the club decided to end his nine-year spell in the summer of 2015.

After managing just 180 appearances during his near decade in England, Diaby returned to France to join Marseille over a year ago.

However, it was more of the same in the 30-year-old’s first season at the Velodrome after just three appearances, and with just two under his belt this term, it appears there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

The official statement read: “For several weeks, the midfielder Abou Diaby was suffering with a problem in his right ankle. Given the persistence of pain and unable to train normally, the medical staff decided the need for surgery.

“Abou Diaby underwent surgery last Thursday. He underwent transplantation and tibialis posterior ligament stabilising the ankle by Dr. Calder, in London, who following the case from the beginning.

“His absence is estimated at 4 months. Olympique de Marseille wish a speedy recovery to Abu and hope to see him as soon as possible on the pitch.”

Many have called on Diaby to hang up his boots in the past, but credit to the midfielder he has stuck to his guns and hoped to overcome his injury problems, although that now appears to be a fading hope.
