Diaby: Injuries prevented me from winning Ballon d’Or

Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby has claimed he could have won the Ballon d’Or if his career had not been blighted by injuries.

Diaby, currently on the books at Marseille and, somewhat predictably, sidelined with a foot injury, has made less than 200 career club appearances despite being in his 13th season as a professional.

He joined the Gunners for £2million in 2005 and spent a decade in north London, but managed only 16 Premier League outings in his final four seasons at the club.

And now, speaking to France Football, Diaby has claimed he could have won football’s top prize if he had not suffered with injuries.

“I have no limits. Once upon a time, people would ask me about the Ballon D’Or.

“I told them I dreamt about it. I have always had big ambitions, like to become one of the best in my position. I think that I had the potential to achieve that.

“I am not saying it pretentiously, but some people in life are ambitious, others aren’t.
