Chelsea suffer major injury scare with new goalkeeper Mendy

Edouard Mendy has returned to Chelsea after sustaining an injury while on international duty with Senegal.

The 28-year-old has been training with the national team after being called up for a friendly against Morroco on Friday.

He has, however, been forced to return to Stamford Bridge after suffering a thigh injury.

Mendy will assessed by Chelsea’s medical staff after completing a £22million to Frank Lampard’s club this summer.

The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed the news via an official statement on their website.

It said: ‘The Senegalese Football Federation announces the goalkeeper of the National Selection Edouard Mendy sustained an injury to the right thigh that occurred during the training session on Wednesday, October 07, 2020 and has undergone a medical examination at the hospital in Rabat.

‘Edouard Mendy has also left the group this afternoon to return to his Club (Chelsea) where he will undergo further examinations.

‘The Senegalese Football Federation wishes him a speedy recovery.

‘He will be replaced by the young goalkeeper of the U20 national team, Boubacar Fall, who was regrouping in Toubab Dialao and who moved to Rabat in the early evening.’

Lampard will be on tenterhooks as he waits to see if his new signing will be fit for the rest of the season.

There have been calls for Mendy to take Kepa’s place as the No.1 between the sticks at Chelsea given his impressive form at Rennes.

Lampard hopes Mendy will help eradicate their poor defensive record, having conceded 54 goals in 38 Premier League games last season.
