Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is monitoring Lionel Messi’s situation at Barcelona.
Manchester City are regarded as favourites for the Argentine should he allow his contract to run down this season.
But Chelsea will ‘definitely’ be in the race to sign Messi if he is available next summer, claims Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “Chelsea, definitely in the equation if Messi becomes available.
“All that is true.”
Messi looked set to leave the Nou Camp earlier this year after he handed in a transfer request.
But the six-time Ballon d’Or decided to stay and see out the final year of his contract in Spain.
