Chelsea move closer to a deal for Havertz with personal terms agreed

Chelsea are reportedly moving closer to landing Germany starlet Kai Havertz after holding constructive talks with his club Bayer Leverkusen.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea and Leverkusen are still thrashing out terms over Havertz’s £90million price-tag, but the player himself is set on a move to Stamford Bridge.

And it is believed that the two clubs moved nearer to an agreement on Wednesday, with a series of bonuses and add-ons taking Chelsea’s offer closer to the £90m mark and moving Havertz a step towards sealing his move to the Premier League.

The 21-year-old’s potential arrival in London would mark yet another coup for boss Frank Lampard as he looks to build on an encouraging first season at Chelsea.

He has already signed Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and forward Timo Werner from Red Bull Leipzig as two eye-catching attacking additions.

Havertz has been coveted by elite clubs across Europe but Chelsea have caught his attention the most. He made 45 appearances for Leverkusen in the 2019-20 campaign, scoring an impressive 18 goals for the German club.

But their fifth-place finish consigned them to another season of Europa League football and the Germany international has his sights set on the Champions League.

Lampard led Chelsea to a fourth-place finish in his first season at the team where he made his name as a player, against impressive odds considering they were under a transfer ban when he replaced Maurizio Sarri last summer.

It is believed Lampard also wants defensive reinforcements added to his ranks at Chelsea, with Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell of interest alongside Brighton defender Ben White, who spent last season on loan at Championship winners Leeds.

Chelsea begin the Premier League season away to Brighton on September 14, followed by a game against champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
