Carrick set to become new Manchester United captain

Michael Carrick will be Manchester United’s new captain when Wayne Rooney leaves for Everton, according to reports.

Rooney is on the verge of returning to Goodison Park after 13 years at Old Trafford.

And The Sun claims that Jose Mourinho has chosen Carrick as the man to get the armband next season with Ander Herrera picked as vice-captain.

Carrick, who led the team in Rooney’s absence last season, was given a new contract at the end of May to keep him at Old Trafford until next summer.

Rooney, meanwhile, is closing in on a move back to Goodison Park and his agent, Paul Stretford, held talks with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright on Wednesday.

No deal has been agreed but United may be required to pay the last two years of Rooney’s contract in order to pave the way for the forward’s exit on a free transfer.
