Carrick reveals what Guardiola told him at the final whistle of Manchester derby draw

Pep Guardiola revealed ahead of the Manchester derby that Michael Carrick is ‘one of the best holding midfielders I’ve ever seen’.

‘I am a big fan of Michael,’ the former Barcelona manager said.

‘He is one of the best holding midfielders I’ve ever seen in my life by far.

‘He’s the level of Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets.’

The love-in appeared to continue on Thursday night as the pair exchanged pleasantries after the final whistle.

After the 0-0 draw at the Etihad, the City boss walked up to Carrick, embraced him, and shared several words.

When quizzed in the tunnel after the game exactly what was said, Carrick did not go into great detail but did give a little away.

‘He just said congratulations and well played,’ the 35-year-old told Sky Sports.

‘He’s obviously a terrific manager.

‘I’ve got a lot of respect for him.’
