Cahill spends two nights in hospital putting FA Cup semi-final place in doubt

Gary Cahill is a major doubt for Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final with Tottenham having spent two nights in hospital this week.

The Telegraph report that Cahill was admitted to hospital with a mystery illness on Tuesday following a regular training session.

They claim he underwent treatment and tests before being released on Thursday.

Chelsea have made no comment.

The episode puts Cahill’s involvement in Saturday’s all-London FA Cup semi-final at Wembley in doubt. Antonio Conte may feel the England centre-back is not ready for the contest.

The Chelsea manager will still have plenty of options should he opt to omit Cahill, with Kurt Zouma, John Terry and Nathan Ake available to fill in.

Cahill’s illness comes a few days after a bug affected a few other members of the squad. Marcos Alonso was forced to pull out of Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester United on Sunday at the last minute after feeling too unwell to participate. It’s understood Victor Moses and Diego Costa were also feeling the effects of the same illness.

The Telegraph report that Cahill’s problem is not linked to the bug that hit the side at the weekend.
