Belgium captain Kompany confirms he will miss Euro 2016

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has revealed he will not feature at the European Championships with Belgium this summer after his latest injury set-back.

Kompany was forced from the field during this past week’s Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid, lasting just ten minutes before struggling with what appeared to be a thigh issue.

There had been concerns about the length of time the latest set-back would keep the centre-back out for and now the player’s, and his national side’s, worst fears have been confirmed with Kompany now unavailable for the tournament in France.

Kompany made the announcement through social media on Saturday but has resolved to come back stronger from his latest problems and will not give up.

Writing on Facebook the 30-year-old also indicated he would be fiercely cheering on his national team-mates.

It’s been a difficult year for Kompany when it comes to injuries. The defender has made just 14 Premier League appearances for his side, the fewest in any season he has played in the top flight since his move to the club.

The injury blow is not just huge for Belgium, who will now be without their captain at this summer’s tournament, but also to Manchester City who will miss their leader for the final two matches of the Premier League campaign.
