Bayern Munich Eliminates PSG To Book A Spot In The Quarterfinals

After having a goal advantage in the first leg at the Parc des Princes, Bayern Munich inflicted more misery to Paris Saint Germain at the Allianz Arena to qualify to the next round of the UEFA Champions League.

It was a keenly contested match in the first period as both teams are at the same par. Though, few goal-scoring opportunities were created but the quality in both teams was there to see.

The best chance in the first 45 minutes fell to the path of PSG’s midfielder, Vitinha when Yann Sommer dallies with the ball in the box, but Matthijs de Ligt’s astonishing goal-line clearance saved his blushes.

The first goal of the game came in the 61st minute when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting – who already had the ball into the back of the net, but was later ruled out for offside – benefitted from Leon Goretzka’s simple pass as he tapped the ball into an empty and broke the hearts of his former employers.

After the first goal went in, the match became a one-sided affair as Bayern begin to dominate proceedings. They created many goal-scoring chances that were spurned with Leroy Sane guilty of most of them.

The second goal of the night came in the 89th minute when Joao Cancelo ran from his half to the final third and laid a pass to the path of Serge Gnabry who buried the ball at the bottom corner of Gigi Donnarumma’s goal.

Bayern’s forward, Thomas Muller was named the man of the match by UEFA

Bayern have now recorded four victories in five matches over PSG including the 2020 UCL final.

Bayern Munich joins Chelsea, Benfica and AC Milan in the last eight of the competition.

What Did The Victory Mean For Bayern Munich?

The victory means Bayern have now qualified for the quarterfinals of the UCL for the 21st time. The Bavarian club has made the most quarterfinal appearances in the history of the competition.

It was also a record breaking night for Lionel Messi as he became the third player to record 150+ appearances in the competition, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas with 178 and 176 appearances respectively.
