Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is edging closer to a potential move away from the club, with Ajax stepping up their efforts to sign the experienced German shot-stopper on loan this summer.
The 34-year-old is reportedly open to the switch as discussions continue between Ajax, Barcelona and the player’s representatives.
According to reports, Ajax manager Michel and sporting director Jordi Cruyff are keen to make Ter Stegen their new first-choice goalkeeper, with an initial loan agreement currently under negotiation.
The biggest obstacle remains the goalkeeper’s salary, reports Barca News Network.
As one of Barcelona’s highest earners, Ter Stegen’s wages have become a major factor in negotiations, with the Catalan club pushing for Ajax to cover a significant portion of his salary before approving any move.
Salary negotiations hold the key to potential transfer
Barcelona view Ter Stegen’s departure as more than just a squad decision. Reducing their wage bill has become a priority as the club continues to manage its finances while preparing for the new season under Hansi Flick.
With his role no longer guaranteed, keeping such a high-earning player on the bench is seen as difficult to justify.

Ajax, meanwhile, believe they can offer the veteran goalkeeper regular football and a leadership role, making the move attractive from a sporting perspective.
Although Ter Stegen remains a respected figure after years of service at Barcelona, all parties recognise that a temporary move could benefit everyone.
If Ajax present a satisfactory salary-sharing proposal, the loan deal could move forward quickly, giving Barcelona greater financial flexibility while allowing the German international to revive his career with consistent first-team football.
