Barcelona ‘keen to sign Man City captain Kompany on free’ at the end of the season

Barcelona are considering whether to offer Vincent Kompany a contract when his current deal with Manchester City comes to an end.

The City captain, who moved to the Etihad over 10 years ago, will become a free agent next summer if City do not offer him fresh terms.

And according to The Sun, Barca are interested in bringing him to Spain as they look to add experience to their defensive ranks.

Kompany will be free to negotiate with clubs outside of England when the January transfer window opens, although there have already been initial discussions with City regarding a new deal.

It is claimed that both Kompany and his representatives are happy to wait until later in the season to make a decision on his future.

Kompany, who is in his testimonial year with City, had been expected to remain at the club long-term, either as part of the coaching setup or in another role behind the scenes.

But the 32-year-old could now be given the chance to extend his playing career in La Liga and challenge for trophies under Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde.

Kompany has been restricted to 11 appearances in all competitions so far this season and was left on the bench by Pep Guardiola during Sunday’s defeat at Chelsea.

John Stones and Aymeric Laporte have grown into the Spaniard’s preferred central defensive duo this term, with Kompany increasingly playing a bit-part role.

The Belgium international has played 339 times for City since joining the club from Anderlecht for just £6.5million, winning three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and three League Cups.
