Barcelona Considering €20 Million-Rated Borussia Dortmund Defender As A Possible Right-Back Option

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has been considering Julian Ryerson as a potential future right-back replacement.

The Norwegian defender has piqued the club’s interest with his attacking production, physical intensity, and, most importantly, tactical versatility, all of which are increasingly prized at the Camp Nou.

Notably, Ryerson is under contract until 2028, with a market worth of approximately €20 million.

While that figure places him in a reasonable category among elite full-backs, any potential move would be contingent on timing and Barcelona’s overall squad planning.

Why Ryerson?

One of the primary reasons for Barcelona’s interest is Ryerson’s versatility. This season, he has primarily played as a wing-back in a five-man defence, allowing him to press high up the pitch and impact assaults.

However, his usefulness does not end there. He has also been used as a third centre-back when necessary and can even play as an emergency left-back, providing crucial defensive support across the back line.

According to the publication, Ryerson displays a different profile than Jules Kounde.

While Kounde is more involved in the build-up phase and frequently connects with the final third, the Dortmund defense plays higher up the pitch.

Ryerson benefits from playing as a wingback, whereas Kounde frequently shares his flank with Lamine Yamal, which naturally shifts responsibilities.

As a result, the Norwegian takes more shoots, crosses the ball more, and makes more important passes, which lead directly to goal attempts.

Nonetheless, despite the increased interest, it should be noted that Barcelona’s primary priority for the winter transfer window remains elsewhere.

The club’s primary goal is to strengthen the left side of central defence, so any move for a right-back like Ryerson is more likely to be a long-term consideration than an immediate priority.
