Atletico Madrid Overtake Real Madrid, Griezmann Nets Double In Cadiz Win

Atletico Madrid defeated Cadiz 5-1 on Wednesday to surpass rival Real Madrid and climb into second place in La Liga, with Antoine Griezmann continuing to excel.

Diego Simeone’s team sits 13 points behind league-leading Barcelona, who only need two more points to win the league title, and one point ahead of Real Madrid.

Griezmann opened the scoring for Atletico against Cadiz in the second minute and added a second to extend his own stellar streak.

This season in La Liga, the French attacker has 13 goals and 13 assists. The Rojiblancos have been the best team in the competition in 2023 with Griezmann pulling the strings.

While it is too late for them to earn any silverware, overtaking Real Madrid does offer some small reward.

Alvaro Morata netted the third in the 49th minute and Yannick Carrasco converted a penalty for the fourth.

Chucky Lozano smashed in a brilliant consolation for Cadiz, 15th and only a point above the drop zone, but Nahuel Molina tucked home Atletico’s fifth immediately after.

Elsewhere on the night, struggling Valencia earned a 1-1 draw with fifth-placed Villarreal.

However, they remain in 17th place, level on points with Getafe, 18th, who beat Celta Vigo 1-0.
