Authorities are searching for 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, who has been described as “armed and dangerous” following four separate shootings reported within a 30-minute period on Tuesday night.
One of the incidents occurred on Prospect Avenue, roughly a 15-minute drive from England’s training facility at Swope Soccer Village, where Thomas Tuchel’s squad are preparing for the tournament.
Police Launch Major Manhunt
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed officers are actively pursuing the suspect after a series of violent incidents that also included an Uber driver being shot while transporting fans to a World Cup match.
A lengthy police standoff later took place at a house in Independence, where Sanchez-Munoz was believed to be hiding. The property eventually caught fire, but officers were unable to locate him after extinguishing the blaze.
Three adults and a teenager were hospitalised, with one victim reportedly suffering life-threatening injuries, reports Daily Mail.
Chief Graves urged the public to contact emergency services immediately if the suspect is seen, stressing that additional law enforcement resources are already in place to ensure World Cup events remain secure.
England Facing Off-Field Challenges
The latest incident adds to a turbulent stay in Kansas City for England.
The squad returned to the city after their 4-2 victory over Croatia and are scheduled to play a behind-closed-doors training match at Swope Soccer Village.
Earlier in the tournament, equipment belonging to the England team was stolen while being transported to their training base, with items including football boots, signed shirts and training gear later recovered.
Players were also forced to remain indoors over the weekend after severe weather warnings and tornado alerts were issued across the Kansas City area.
