Akanji: I’m Not At Manchester City To Be A “Random Player”

Manuel Akanji has stated that he is not at Manchester City to be a “random player,” with the Swiss defender drawing inspiration from fellow summer arrival Erling Haaland.

On the final day of the transfer window, the 27-year-old center defender completed a £15m ($17m) transfer from Borussia Dortmund to the Etihad Stadium.

Although, he is aware that the competition is tough at the current Premier League winners, he is confident in his ability to follow in the footsteps of free-scoring striker Haaland by making a name for himself in English football.

When everyone is fit, Akanji will compete for game time at City with the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Aymeric Laporte.

However, such is not the case as Pep Guardiola has had to add reinforcements to his defense unit as a result of a number of injuries.

What Did Akanji Say?

He told the Manchester Evening News of his ambition: “I also want to show I did not come here to be just a random player. I want to be on this team and play as much as possible.

“Some people might still have doubts about it and I need to prove to them I can do it, and that’s why I’m here.

“Even Erling when he came, there were questions over if he could do here the same. Of course, he’s proving them wrong.

“I want to prove myself. I know I am capable of doing it, but I need to show it.”
