Ajax star Brian Brobbey Reveals Why He Rejected Man Utd Transfer After Text From Erik Ten Hag

Ajax forward Brian Brobbey has revealed that he spoke with Erik ten Hag about a possible move to Manchester United this summer but turned down the offer.

Brobbey played the second half of last season on loan at the Johan Cruyff Arena under Erik ten Hag. At the end of that season, the Dutch manager left Ajax to become manager of the Red Devils.

Ten Hag has been looking for fresh players in the Eredivisie since moving to Old Trafford. Left-back Tyrell Malaci , has already joined, and Antony and Cody Gakpo are also on his radar.

Brobbey, on the other hand, has disclosed that he turned down a move to Manchester United. Brobbey joined Ajax from RB Leipzig for £13 million in the summer after scoring seven goals in 11 Eredivisie appearances under Ten Hag.

United were connected with a bid for the striker before he returned to Amsterdam. Despite Ten Hag’s personal involvement, Brobbey chose to join Ajax instead.

Why Did Brobbey Turn Down Move To Man Utd?

“I absolutely wanted to go to Ajax. Erik also wanted to work with me, texted once if I was open to it, but I thanked him nicely. I wanted to go back. My friends here, Ajax’s playing style, it just wasn’t finished yet,” he told Voetbal International.

“I first have to really succeed here as a striker of Ajax. That’s also how the past six months felt, when I played here on a rental basis. I really had the feeling afterwards: I really have to go back. Believe me, in a few years I will provide a nice transfer fee for Ajax and then the club will have made a nice profit.

“Good strikers include Dusan Tadic, Steven Bergwijn, Davy Klaassen, and Lorenzo Lucca. I am a basic player right now, but all I need to do is perform well by scoring goals. The trainer will then be unable to ignore me, and I join the team.”

Brobbey has started two of Ajax’s three Eredivisie games this season, after coming off the bench on the first. In that game, he led a comeback against Fortuna Sittard, striking once and assisting on another.
