Jamie Carragher Calls Xabi Alonso A ‘Mistake’ As Chelsea’s Search For A New Manager

Jamie Carragher feels Real Madrid made a “mistake” by allowing Xabi Alonso to depart in January, and that appointing his former teammate as Chelsea’s new head coach would be a “great” economic decision.

Alonso has been on the Blues’ shortlist to replace Liam Rosenior since he was stripped of his responsibilities last month. Chelsea’s five-strong council of sports directors is driving the process of appointing a new head coach, and the former Liverpool and Real Madrid player is one of several names under consideration.

Alongside Alonso on the list of Chelsea’s candidates are Oliver Glasner, Cesc Fabregas, Marco Silva, Filipe Luis and Andoni Iraola, football.london understands. At this juncture, all alternatives are being considered, with nothing progressed, although there appears to be a lot of enthusiasm about Alonso at the time of writing.

Carragher, who played with Alonso at Liverpool, says the former Reds midfielder would “love” to coach at Anfield in the future. However, if he ends up being Chelsea’s new head coach, things will get more tricky.

“I can understand why they would go for Xabi Alonso,” Carragher stated on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “It felt like less than a year ago, he was the new kid on the block, if you will, in terms of prominent managers, and you were wondering if he might be the next Pep [Guardiola]. He had a successful playing career before transitioning to management.

“He has a great start, but it doesn’t quite work out in Madrid.” I believe Madrid made a mistake by getting rid of him. I believe that would be a wonderful coup for Chelsea.
