Ghana Part Ways With Head Coach Just 72 Days Before World Cup

Ghana have reportedly fired head coach Otto Addo 72 days before the World Cup 2026 began due to a string of subpar performance in the tournament’s preparation.

Addo oversaw four straight losses, including 5-1 and 2-1 losses to Austria and Germany in the previous week, which led to the decision to dismiss the manager.

The Ghana Football Association issued a statement stating that they had “parted ways” with the manager “effective immediately” after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations under Addo’s direction.

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

Ghana will play England in their second World Cup match on June 23 in Massachusetts after being placed in Thomas Tuchel’s side’s group. Additionally, they play Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27 and Panama in Toronto on June 17.

Canada, Mexico, and the United States will host the World Cup from June 11 to July 19.

During his playing career, Addo earned 15 caps for Ghana. In March 2024, after being granted permission to leave Borussia Dortmund, where he served as talent coach, he took over the Black Stars for a second stint as head coach.
