Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson has conceded that the club will need to be open for business as Sandro Tonali remains linked with Manchester United. Several midfielders have been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford, since several players in that position are set to leave M16.
The Red Devils will lose Casemiro when his contract ends at the end of June, and with Manuel Ugarte facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford due to his problems, reinforcements are required. Tonali has been connected with Nottingham Forest player Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
According to ChronicleLive, Newcastle are not concerned about Tonali’s future at St James’ Park. The 25-year-old’s deal goes until 2029, with an option for an additional year.
However, once the club’s books for the previous fiscal year were disclosed, Hopkinson cited Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool last summer as an example of how the Magpies could sell their top players for a reasonable price.
He Stated?
He said, “We don’t have an overall strategy for [pushing] players out. “We consider what players may wish to accomplish this summer. However, if an Isak-like scenario occurs again, any player under contract will be released on our terms, and we will take advantage of any opportunities that may arise for the club. Yes, it is correct.
“Isak was a good sale for me (in terms of receiving a British record fee). I wasn’t present for the Isak situation, so I don’t want to remark on something I didn’t witness firsthand. What I do know is that players who leave this club must do so under our terms.”
Manchester City, United’s rivals, are also allegedly interested in Tonali. Meanwhile, sources from Premier League leaders Arsenal stated that the Italian is not on their radar.
Newcastle are said to be dissatisfied with the player’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, who has openly addressed his client’s potential departure.
When previously speaking to Italian media about the former AC Milan star, he said: “If he shines at the World Cup, will City or Arsenal be right behind him?
“I’m not sure, but it’s quite likely. Everyone is waiting for the World Cup; then a thousand scenarios will play out, but everything begins after the World Cup.”
