Scott McTominay is a doubt for Manchester United, who are without suspended captain Ashley Young, for the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday. McTominay and Harry Maguire appeared to sustain knocks in United’s Europa League victory over Partizan Belgade on Thursday night with the Scottish international midfielder leaving his team to see out the 3-0 win in the 75th minute.
McTominay underwent some treatment on an area around his ankle and instep after riding a challenge and went off under his own steam, which could be a positive sign for his availability for the Seagulls clash.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said of McTominay’s injury: “I don’t know how bad it will be. But he said he was going to be okay – then he couldn’t [continue] so hopefully he’ll be okay for Sunday, I don’t know.”
Solskjaer also revealed that Victor Lindelof missed the Partizan game as he nurses an issue with his back, but the Sweden international could be in a position to return on Sunday.
Paul Pogba has already been ruled out for the rest of the month, while Tim Fosu-Mensah and Eric Bailly are making progress on their long roads back to fitness after surgery.
Young is suspended after accumulating five yellow cards in the Premier League, but Solskjaer would not confirm if 18-year-old Brandon Williams is his preferred option to operate in his absence at left-back.
Luke Shaw is not yet ready to return after less than a week’s training but Marcos Rojo, who has impressed during his recent opportunities, is a candidate to play on the left of the back four.
Juan Mata is a contender to play in the number ten role if Solskjaer looks to his experience over Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira.
Brighton look set to be without Adam Webster, Jose Izquierdo and Bernardo for the trip to Old Trafford, but Leandro Trossard could work his way back into the Albion starting line-up for the first time since August.
Webster has damaged ankle ligaments and is expected to miss between four to six weeks.
Shane Duffy is in contention for his first league start since mid-September, with Leon Balogun likely to be restored to the matchday squad.
