Xabi Alonso Replies To Speculations Being Liverpool And Bayern Munich Manager

Xabi Alonso has refused to comment on speculation that he could become Liverpool’s next manager, despite Bayern Munich having made him their preferred candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel.

Alonso is the clear favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp in the Liverpool dugout, with the Reds’ manager announcing last month his intention to step down at the end of the season after nearly nine years in charge.

Liverpool Echo notes the former Liverpool midfielder is having an outstanding season in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, who are unbeaten in all competitions and sit eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the German Cup and the last 16 of the Europa League.

The Reds aren’t the only former club pursuing Alonso, with reports in Germany this week indicating he’s wanted by Bayern, who have announced they’ll part ways with Tuchel in the summer.

However, the 44-year-old could still stay at Leverkusen and was focused on his current club when speaking on Thursday afternoon ahead of their Bundesliga match against Mainz on Friday evening.

“Bayern, Liverpool? I have nothing new to say,” said Alonso. “Right now I’m Bayer Leverkusen coach and that’s certain. Regarding the future, I have nothing new to say.

“Have I received a call from Bayern? That’s only hypothetical. Again, I have nothing new to say.”
