Steven Gerrard Blames Two Liverpool ‘Key’ Players After UCL Defeat To PSG

Steven Gerrard criticised two Liverpool players after the Reds suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in France.

Liverpool were outplayed at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday.

The Reds now face a huge task at Anfield next Tuesday if they want to keep their European hopes alive, reports GOAL.

Paris Saint-Germain took control early and punished Liverpool with a dominant display that exposed several defensive weaknesses throughout the match.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard believes the visitors looked unsettled and struggled badly to cope with PSG’s pace, movement and intensity.

He specifically singled out Ibrahima Konate and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for criticism after the opening goal in Paris.

Gerrard felt Konate should have done more to stop Désiré Doué before the French forward opened the scoring for PSG.

According to Gerrard, the Liverpool defender lost his duel too easily and allowed PSG to take complete control defensively.

The Liverpool legend also questioned Mamardashvili’s positioning and suggested the goalkeeper stood too far away from his goal line.

Gerrard believes the Georgian international may have given himself a better chance by staying slightly deeper for the shot.

He also praised PSG for their sharp pressing, clever movement and ability to attack the ball quicker than Liverpool.

Liverpool now must produce a major response at Anfield if they are to overturn the deficit and reach the semi-finals.

The winner of the tie will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in what would be another huge European test.
