Southampton Frontrunners To Sign James Garner From Manchester United

Southampton are leading the chase to sign Manchester United midfielder James Garner after United chose to sell him last week, despite interest from Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton.

Garner, 21, is estimated to be worth between £15 million and £20 million. He has not appeared in a competitive game for Manchester United since December 2019.

According to some accounts, United undervalued Garner, who came through the club’s academy and is an England Under-21 international.

Southampton have secured Manchester City academy graduates Gavin Bazunu and Romeo Lavia this summer. They also had an offer for City striker Liam Delap, who is now on loan at Stoke City, rejected.

Garner thrived on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, helping the club end a 23-year absence from the Premier League.

Why Did United Put James Garner Up For Sale?

According to reports, Manchester United have decided to sell youngster James Garner.

Garner returned to Old Trafford this summer, hoping to get into the first squad, but injury restricted him to just one appearance on the club’s pre-season tour.

The midfielder had a wonderful loan spell with Nottingham Forest last season, helping the club return to the top flight for the first time this century.

Forest have previously attempted to re-sign Garner on loan, but United have rejected their efforts because Ten Hag wanted to see the England U21 ace up close and personal.

United are desperate for midfielders after losing Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Andreas Pereira, and have only bought Christian Eriksen as a replacement.

However, the club is now willing to sell Garner if a reasonable deal is received in order to increase Ten Hag’s transfer budget.

United is said to value Garner at approximately £15m, and the money may be used to assist them attract Frenkie de Jong away from Barcelona.
