Newcastle United Begin Talks To Sign Barcelona Forward Memphis Depay

Newcastle United have reportedly begun preliminary talks to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay on loan this month.

The Dutchman is under contract until the summer of 2023, but has fallen down the pecking order at Camp Nou with the arrivals of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

Depay, 28, joined Barcelona as a free agent after his contract with Lyon expired in 2021.

He has appeared in 42 games for the Catalan club, scoring 14 goals and assisting on two others. However, this season has been marred by injury, with only four appearances and one goal.

Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan have both expressed interest in the Dutch forward. However, it appears that Newcastle is attempting to entice the frontman to St James’ Park.

According to Football Insider, Eddie Howe’s side and the Spanish club have begun talks about a possible loan move for the Dutch international.

However, Depay may be lured by the project Eddie Howe has overseen on Tyneside since succeeding Steve Bruce in November 2021. Newcastle currently sits third in the Premier League, nine points behind leaders Arsenal, one point behind Manchester City, and five points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

They appear to be on track to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its current format. Depay brings a wealth of experience to a Magpies squad that are having a memorable season.

According to the report, Depay’s former club PSV Eindhoven are interested as they look for a replacement for Cody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool earlier this month for £37m.
