Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez were suspended, while Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro were sidelined through injury.
That left youngster Ayden Heaven as the only recognised centre-back available.
Heaven’s Breakthrough Performance Creates Selection Headache
The 19-year-old, who has struggled for minutes since Carrick moved away from a back three, seized his opportunity in impressive fashion.
Partnered unexpectedly by Noussair Mazraoui in central defence, Heaven took command of the back line and delivered a standout display.
He dominated aerial duels, remained composed in possession with an 89 percent pass accuracy, and handled Chelsea’s attacking threats with maturity beyond his years.
His performance drew praise from Carrick, who highlighted the youngster’s readiness despite limited recent game time.
With Maguire set to return and Yoro nearing full fitness, Carrick now faces a major decision, reports Manchester Evening News.
While experienced options may come back into the starting XI, Heaven’s display has made him difficult to drop.
The young defender has not only proven he can perform at the highest level but has also firmly pushed himself into contention for a regular starting role moving forward.
