Marcus Rashford, Kevin De Bruyne Nominated For Premier League Player of The Month

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne are both on the Premier League Player of the Month shortlist for September.

With Anthony Martial still out injured, Rashford has continued to hold Cristiano Ronaldo at bay at Old Trafford, scoring twice and assisting twice this month.

Due to Queen Elizabeth II’s death and following state funeral, Erik ten Hag’s team will only play two Premier League games this month, winning against Leicester City and Arsenal.

Rashford set up Jadon Sancho’s goal in the 1-0 win over Leicester before putting through Antony to open the scoring against Arsenal, and he struck a second-half brace to hand the league leaders a 3-1 defeat.

The 24-year-old has now been nominated for Premier League Player of the Month, but Gareth Southgate has overlooked him for a spot in the England squad due to a muscular injury.

There were certain players we wanted to keep involved this time, but that said it doesn’t mean that this is the end for some of the others who aren’t involved,” Southgate said after choosing his squad for the UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany in September.

“Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently. He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks, he of course will be under consideration.”

Premier League Player Of The Month Nominees:

Rashford and Manchester United will return to Premier League action on October 2 against Manchester City, where fellow nominee Kevin De Bruyne will look to build on a strong September.

The Belgian playmaker contributed three assists as the defending champions drew with Aston Villa and defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month, and he is one of three players from the Big Six clubs competing for the award.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg contributed to his team’s back-to-back victories against Fulham and Leicester, scoring against the former and setting up another in the 6-2 thrashing of the Foxes.

Other nominees include Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi, who assisted Neal Maupay’s winner against West Ham United and played the whole 90 minutes in the Merseyside tie with Liverpool.

Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey is another name on the list, having set up Leon Bailey’s equaliser against Manchester City before scoring the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Southampton.

Finally, Bournemouth’s Philip Billing receives a nod after scoring against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, with the former being a stunning long-range effort.

Erling Braut Haaland was named Player of the Month in August, while Rashford is the only one of September’s contenders to have won the award, which he did in January 2019.

Despite being named Premier League Player of the Season for 2021-22, Manchester City’s De Bruyne is yet to win a Player of the Month award.
