Manchester City Target Kalvin Phillips To Improve Midfield Options

Manchester City are considering a summer transfer for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The newly crowned Premier League champions have put the Englishman at the top of their list of midfield alternatives as they look to replace the outgoing Fernandinho.

According to the Times, Pep Guardiola’s team are preparing a bid for Phillips, who has also been connected with Manchester United, Aston Villa, Arsenal, and West Ham United.

Declan Rice of West Ham was another option, but the stated asking price of 150 million pound was off-putting.

Phillips, who has two years left on his contract, will not be a cheap choice, although Leeds survived relegation on the final day of the Premier League season, bolstering their bargaining power.

Manchester City Transfer News

The news is unsurprising, given City are known for moving rapidly in the early stages of the transfer market, and this summer is no exception.

They have already secured the services of River Plate forward Julian Alvarez and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Erling Haaland.

They are also making progress in their pursuit of Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella. He’s had a fantastic season, and Guardiola believes the former Barcelona youngster can finally put an end to his left-back issues.

If the move for Phillips falls through, possible targets include Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni, who is considered to be worth roughly 60 million pounds. The 22-year-old Frenchman has been linked with Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona is another great midfielder who has been connected with a number of large European clubs, but he is regarded to play too attackingly for Guardiola’s current demands at City.

City will be seeking to assemble a squad that can finally win the Champions League this summer, after being knocked out in the semi-finals by Real Madrid this season.
