England And Arsenal Legend Calls Time On Career As Manager

Former Arsenal defender, Sol Campbell has reportedly called quit, his career as a manager despite once claiming he is ‘one of the greatest minds in football’.

Although, the 49-year-old was a regular for his country and went on to win the Premier League on two occasions with Arsenal under Arsene Wenger, he could not achieve the same success in the dugout.

In 2020, he was fired from his second and last management position at a struggling League One outfit.

In 2018, he announced that he was ‘one of the greatest minds in football’ and that he had been ‘wasted due of a lack of experience’ when Oxford United rejected him for his first job.

He publicly advocated for a shift in culture that would enable more black coaches to be offered managerial positions. This is a noble cause that he supported.

The former England international led Southend United and Macclesfield Town, but hasn’t held a managerial role in over three years.

Campbell will no longer be seeking any more positions in the dug-out, even though he still enjoys coaching and wants to continue working with young football talents.

What Did Campbell Say About His Decision To End Managerial Career?

He told PA as reported by Daily Mail: ‘For me, it is about getting opportunities to fail.

‘Some of my peers have had jobs and it’s not worked out and then they have had opportunities again straight away, they’ve always had a lifeline.

‘That is a nice position to be in. I am not in that position, I would love to be, but those situations are not coming to me. I would love to be involved in football and have chances, but that is not happening.

‘You have to look at football in a different way and that is what I am going to start doing and hopefully it will work out and I will be able to help players, just in a different way.

‘I am not applying any more for jobs. I’m happy to be in a different space now and one I want to be in.

‘Football needs that diversity in terms of management, but for me it seems to have gone backwards in some cases.’
