‘Any Captain Has To Show An Example’ – Vidic On Maguire

Former Manchester United defender, Nemanja Vidic thinks Harry Maguire is having a hard time earning the respect of the Manchester United locker room because of his inconsistent play.

When Erik ten Hag was named the club’s head-coach, Maguire retained his position. Despite widespread opinion that he ought to have given it up. But the new manager decided to keep the captain chosen in 2020 rather than completely rock the boat.

The England international, though, has gradually fallen down the pecking order. And it has become evident during the Dutchman’s first season in charge that he isn’t in his plans. Maguire is no longer a starter when all of United’s defense options are fit. With Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez favored ahead of him.

The Premier League legend made the assertion during a guest appearance on ex-teammate Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE YouTube channel. Speculating that Maguire’s personal difficulties would probably contribute to some of his teammates ignoring some of his demands.

“Maguire has a problem because he doesn’t perform well. When you don’t perform well it’s difficult to say to someone what to do,” Vidic explained.

“I think that Maguire is doing well for the national team, he was great for Leicester. But obviously, he’s struggling to perform for Manchester United the way he’s performing for other clubs.

“It’s difficult to gain that type of respect, it’s nothing against Maguire now. In general, any captain has to be first, has to show an example, has to play well and has to fight for the club and then everybody else will do it.”
