Manchester United have withdrawn their academy sides from the EFL Trophy and National League Cup ahead of the 2026-27 season following the club’s return to the Champions League.
The decision comes after United’s first-team secured Champions League qualification, which automatically earned the club’s under-19 side a place in the UEFA Youth League.

With an increasingly congested fixture schedule, academy officials opted to reduce the workload on young players.
United’s Professional Development Phase squads were facing participation in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League, the Premier League International Cup, the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup, alongside commitments in the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup.
Focus Shifts To Player Development
Following internal discussions, United decided to pull out of both the EFL Trophy and National League Cup. The club had competed in the EFL Trophy since 2019, while last season marked their first involvement in the National League Cup.
The move allows greater emphasis on individual player development, with academy prospects expected to spend more time training rather than navigating an intense match schedule. It will also create additional opportunities for talented youngsters to work closely with Michael Carrick’s first-team squad.
United will continue competing in the Premier League International Cup, believing the tournament offers valuable exposure against academy teams from different countries and playing styles. Officials pointed to last season’s clash with Real Madrid at Old Trafford as a particularly beneficial experience for emerging players, reports Mirror.
The club is also expected to operate with a smaller under-21 squad next season while remaining selective in its recruitment strategy. Despite withdrawing from the two competitions, United maintain they value both tournaments and could reconsider participation before the 2027-28 campaign.
