How Seventh-Place In Premier League Can Get Champions League Spot

The Premier League has assured itself of a fifth Champions League spot for the upcoming season.

For the second consecutive year, English teams have been awarded a European Performance Slot in recognition of their ranking in the UEFA Coefficient Table.

This was confirmed on Tuesday night after Arsenal defeated Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinal.

With all nine of their representatives making it to the round of 16 in their different UEFA events, England mathematically guaranteed their place in the top two of the coefficient rankings.

How Can The Premier League Earn More Champions League Places?

According to talkSPORT, the Premier League would have six teams in the Champions League if Aston Villa, who are presently in fourth place, finish outside of the top four but win the Europa League.

Liverpool are in a similar situation in the Champions League.

The team in sixth place would advance to the Champions League if either team won a European trophy and placed fifth in the EPS qualification standings.

In a particular scenario, though, if Liverpool and Aston Villa both win their European campaigns and place fifth and sixth, the extra spot would put team in seventh place in the Champions League.

Nottingham Forest, who have not yet secured their top division status for the upcoming season, are also in the Europa League quarterfinals. If the Tricky Trees win, they will make it into the Champions League.

Last season, Tottenham, who finished 17th won the Europa League which subsequently earned them a spot in the Champions League.
