FIFA Rejects Call to Ban Israeli Settlement Teams from Competitions

FIFA has decided not to ban Israeli teams based in settlements from participating in official competitions, following a formal complaint raised by the Palestinian Football Association.

The issue was initially brought forward ahead of the 2024 FIFA Congress, with the Palestinian FA requesting action against the Israel Football Association over clubs operating in settlements located in the West Bank.

The matter was reviewed by FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee, which ultimately recommended that no action be taken.

Decision sparks backlash from human rights groups

FIFA stated that the legal status of the West Bank remains complex and unresolved under international law, making disciplinary action difficult.

Instead, the organization has opted to promote dialogue and mediation between the Palestinian FA and the Israel FA at an operational level.

The decision has drawn strong criticism from groups such as Amnesty International, which accused FIFA of failing to uphold its own regulations, reports the national scot.

Critics argue that FIFA statutes prohibit teams from playing in another association’s territory without permission, raising questions about the governing body’s consistency.

The controversy follows a 2024 ruling by the International Court of Justice, which declared Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem illegal under international law, a position disputed by Israel.

While FIFA declined to impose a ban in this case, the organization did fine the Israel FA and issued a warning over a separate discrimination-related complaint, signaling ongoing tensions surrounding football governance in the region.
