‘Fighting’: Former Liverpool Target Goes Out On Newcastle United’s New Contract Hope

Charlie McArthur confesses he’s fighting for his Newcastle United future while on loan at Airdrieonians.

The Magpies reportedly beat out many Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, to sign McArthur from Kilmarnock in July 2022. The centre-back made his Kille debut when he was 16 years old and has captained Scotland at the youth level.

However, two months after coming on Tyneside, McArthur sustained a catastrophic knee injury that sidelined him for nine months. The 20-year-old has recovered enough to make over 50 appearances for the club’s academy, but he has yet to play for the first team.

McArthur gained senior experience through loan spells, spending the second half of last season with Carlisle United before joining Scottish Championship club Airdrie in January.

McArthur made 10 appearances as Carlisle were relegated from League Two, and his stint in Scotland could come to an end with Airdrie currently at the bottom of the table.

With eight games remaining, McArthur is fighting not only to keep Airdrie in the second division, but also for a new contract at Newcastle, as his present deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

McArthur told the Daily Record: “I have six months left on my contract at Newcastle, so I am battling for my future with the club. The ultimate goal is to get that and make it into the Newcastle first team.

“Everyone has a different path, and for me, it’s about gaining experience in men’s football and facing new challenges.

“I wanted to come in and play men’s football in a competitive league. I want to support the club and do my best.
